Frequently Asked Questions
Everything travelers ask about getting to and around the roof of the world.
Flights
Which airlines fly to Skardu?
PIA (Pakistan International Airlines), SereneAir, and airblue operate flights to Skardu (KDU) from Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. Schedules are seasonal and weather-dependent.
Why are Skardu flights often delayed or cancelled?
Skardu Airport operates visually (VFR) during daylight hours only (06:00–18:00 PKT) because of surrounding mountains. Cloud cover, wind, or rain in the valley can ground flights. Always check live status on the morning of travel and keep a flexible itinerary.
How early should I arrive at Skardu Airport?
Arrive 90 minutes before domestic departures. Security and check-in are faster than major airports, but mountain weather can change plans quickly.
Visa & Entry
Do I need a visa for Pakistan?
Most foreign nationals need a visa. Citizens of 175+ countries can apply online for an eVisa (7–10 business days). Travellers from China, Turkey, Malaysia, and several other countries can obtain a Visa on Arrival. Apply at visa.nadra.gov.pk.
Do foreigners need special permits for Gilgit-Baltistan?
Foreign tourists must register with local police within 24 hours of arrival (hotels handle this). Certain areas near the border require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) — your tour operator will arrange it if needed.
Weather & Best Time
When is the best time to visit Skardu?
May to mid-October offers open roads, green valleys, and accessible high passes like Deosai. Winter (November–March) is harsh with closed passes — but stunning for snow landscapes if you can handle the cold.
Will I get altitude sickness in Skardu?
Skardu sits at 2,230m — mild compared to Fairy Meadows (3,300m) or K2 Base Camp (5,000m+). Rest 24–48h on arrival, stay hydrated, and ascend gradually. See our Health & Safety guide for details.
Hotels & Tours
Can I book hotels without paying online?
Yes — many hotels offer pay-at-check-in. Look for the "Pay at hotel" tag. Premium listings support secure online payment via Stripe, JazzCash, or EasyPaisa.
Are the tour operators verified?
Every operator listed on our platform is a registered Gilgit-Baltistan tourism business with validated licenses. Reviews come only from verified bookings.
Car Rental
Do I need a 4x4 in Skardu?
For city and main-road travel, a sedan is fine. For Deosai, Fairy Meadows road, or winter trips, a 4x4 with an experienced local driver is strongly recommended — some roads are unpaved mountain tracks.
Can I drive myself?
Self-drive is limited in the region; most rentals come with a professional local driver who knows the mountain roads. This is also required by some operators for insurance reasons.
Payments & Safety
What payment methods do you accept?
Stripe (Visa/Mastercard), JazzCash, and EasyPaisa for local payments. Card details are processed by Stripe — we never store them.
Is it safe to travel to Skardu?
Gilgit-Baltistan is considered one of Pakistan's safest regions for tourism, with a strong security presence on the Karakoram Highway. Standard travel precautions apply. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking is strongly recommended.
